With the new XenDesktop CCU License options will XenApp only be sold with XenDesktop?

With Citrix’s recent XenDesktop trade up program announcement and adding concurrent user licenses for XenDesktop Enterprise and Platinum, will XenApp licenses no longer be sold in the future?  Will we soon see the end of XenApp being sold as separate product and only sold with XenDesktop licenses?  In this blog post I am going to go over why I think XenApp will start being sold only as part of XenDesktop licenses.

Using XenClient to Update Provisioning Services vDisk Images

In December of 2009 I wrote about Upgrading Provisioning Services vDisk Target Device Software, Virtual Machine Tools, and Network Drivers.  In that blog post I wrote about using the Reverse Imaging, Hyper-V Direct VHD boot, and XenServer Direct VHD boot options for updating Provisioning Services vDisk Target Device Software, Virtual Machine Tools, and Network Drivers.  With the recent releases of Provisioning Services 5.6 SP1 and XenServer 5.6 FP1 I decided to test out using XenClient to update the Provisioning Services images.  In this blog post I am going to go over another option for updating Provisioning Services vDisk images using XenClient.

XenApp needs an “Application Director” like XenDesktop has the Desktop Director

In an earlier blog post,  XenDesktop 5 Announced…Lots of New Features, I discussed the new features of XenDesktop 5 and wrote about the Desktop Director.  In that blog post I linked to the Citrix TV Tour of Desktop Director  video and as I keep watching that video I keep thinking how something like the Desktop Director could be used with XenApp.  Then I was recently in a XenDesktop one day training class and got to see XenDesktop 5 up close. In this one day of training I was able to get hands on with XenDesktop 5 and its various new features. As I was working with one of the new features, Desktop Director, I thought to myself XenApp needs an “Application Director” just like the Desktop Director.

Updating Provisioned XenApp vDisks: To XenAppPrep or not to XenAppPrep?

Over a month ago I was in some conversations with some fellow Citrix consultants on Twitter about how they use XenAppPrep when updating provisioned XenApp servers.  There has also been some forum postings on this subject as well.  This is also a topic of conversation with customers who are testing Provisioning Services with XenApp.  In this blog post I am going to go over some XenAppPrep options when updating provisioned XenApp server images.

Citrix Products 2010: A Wish List (continued) +1

This week Helge Klein started a Citrix products 2010 wish listTim Arenz expanded on Helge’s wish list on his blog earlier today.  I want to expand on both Helge’s and Tim’s additions with my own wishes as well.  I’m sure they both don’t mind since Tim encourages other bloggers to continue adding to this list.  Like Tim, I encourage other bloggers to keep this wish list going.  Helge’s are in black and Tim’s are in red.  So here on are my additions in orange.

Provisioning Services 5.1 SP1 Licensing and XenApp 5 FP2

Citrix has changed licensing for Provisioning Services with the release of Provisioning Services 5.1 Service Pack 1 and XenApp 5 Feature Pack 2.  The license change comes from the new VM Hosted Applications feature in XenApp 5 Feature Pack 2.  With this change I can see how XenApp Enterprise and Platinum Edition licensed customers can be confused on Provisioning Services licensing and what XenApp workloads they can provision.  In this post I will go over the differences in Provisioning Services licensing for XenApp Enterprise and Platinum Editions.

Hosted Apps, Streamed Apps, Seamless Sessions, and Content Redirection

When having a mixed environment of seamless sessions using hosted applications and streamed applications, file type associations (FTA) and content redirection won’t work for streamed applications.  The FTA isn’t recognized and prompts you to select an application to open it with when you click on the streamed application FTA.  In full desktop session that have the XenApp Plugin for Hosted Apps (formerly known as the PNAgent) installed, FTAs and content redirection work properly and the correct streamed application launches fine.  So how do you get around this in a seamless session?  Have the XenApp Plugin for Hosted Apps run within the seamless session.  Below are the steps for setting this up.
