Hi Jarain,

Great post! I saw a few different articles besides yours talking about using xenappprep /PVS to prep your XA machine before running xenconvert. Do to the mixed comments I've seen out on the interwebs regarding the need to set the startup mode to manual I decided for fun to just boot into private mode and see what happen, of course a few things got corrupted. I wasn't able to run xenappprep /PVS any more, nor could I start the IMA service. I ended up using dsmaint recreatelhc and recreaterade to fix my IMA service not starting issue. Once I did that, I was able to rerun xenappprep /PVS.

At that point I saw the importance of just setting the service to manual and using your batch file to read the contents of personality.ini to determine which mode it's in. That really helped! :) Citrix should either upgrade there tool, or at least provide some solid documentation explaining what you explained above regarding the service startup mode. Thanks again!

Hi

I would like to know how you can ensure that ALL App-V apps are pre-cached at XenApp startup? We are implementing a new XenApp 6 Farm with PvS and App-V, so we need to ensure the servers are auto pre-cached upon every startup

Thanks

Hi Jarian,

Nice article!

I always configure the XenAppPrep service to manual using a GPO. The service is being started using a startup script.
I usually create a seperate OU for my Master Target Device which contains minumum GPO's and no startup script. This way I make sure XenAppPrep is never started in private mode.

Like your personality check though!

Cheers

Jarian,

In the latest version of XenAppPrep that came out in the beginning of December, you no longer have to remove and delete the service, just re-run xenappprep /pvs before shutting down and thats it, seem like they have fixed it.

I have been using XenApp Cloning Tool from CitrixTools.net and it is highly recommended. The Citrix XenAppPrep do not get many updates, but the tools from Pierre are frequently updated, and also comes with plugins to automatically publish applications on new provisioned servers.
